a film that speaks of society and the ignorant attitudes held in society towards individuals, especially at the time of its inception, with mental disabilities. It is a study, in
many ways, of sanity and insanity, with the lines often becoming very blurred. It is truly a very real and very profound film that addresses society and the issues of
sanity and insanity. The following paper examines and analyzes sanity and insanity in the film. One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest
Therre are numerous characters in this film, but perhaps the most noted is McMurphy, although the novel by Ken Kesey held Chief as the narrator and primary character (Dirks). McMurphy
is, by all accounts, a relatively sane, if dysfunctional, individual. "Jail is a frequent residence for McMurphy, whose latest conviction is for statutory rape. Rather than spending time behind bars,
he decides it might be easier to serve his time in a psychiatric hospital, so he plays mad" (Berardinelli). Unfortunately he is seen as insane, and seen as a clear
disruption to the system of society and the ward in which he lives. McMurphy is a perfect example, in the film, of
how the sane are seen as insane. Once a person is in such an institution it seems as though they are automatically pegged as insane and in need of help.
They are there, and that is all the reason the professionals need to assume they are insane, or suffering from serious mental problems. This is a very interesting contrast to
another character, the evil Nurse Ratched. One could, in looking at her character, see her as a very mean and cruel individual
