In "On the Variability of Interlanguage Systems" author Elaine Tarone analyzes interlanguage speech production as it occurs among second language learners. Tarones goal is to understand
the variances that characterize interlanguage and to present a framework for accurately analyzing those variances. Tarone specifically examines the importance of task in
the elicitation of data from second language learners. She contends that: "interlanguage speech production
varies systematically with elicitation task" Tarone specifically examines such behavior as the consistent failure of
Japanese speakers learning to speak English in using the third person present singular in casual speech. Where these speakers almost consistently used incorrect sentence structure like "Because she have
to care for their son" in informal or casual speech, they almost unfailingly supplied the endings in more formal speech, uttering sentences like "That store uh sells uh this transportation".
Tarone emphasizes many more consistencies in terms of inaccurate speech patterns among second language learners as well that varied in accordance with whether
or not their speck was formal or more casual. These consistencies varied with the particular native language a speaker used. Tarone clarified these variances by tabulating them and
statistically analyzing them. The variants she identified included: 1. retroflex continuant, 2. less retroflex continuant, 3. voiceless retroflex continuant, 4. retroflex, post-alveolar fricative, 5.
rolled fricative, retroflex, 6. post-alveolar lateral, 7. apico-alveolar flap, 8. apico-alveolar trill, 9. zero sound for post vocalic R, 10. mid central vowel, and
