Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 2 page paper discussing what measure of control we truly have. For now, "controlling" death and aging is limited to the genetic base of individuals plus the effects of long-term health-related choices and living styles, but our current limitations are not indicative of our future ones. As recently as the 1940s the human genome and structure of DNA were mysterious as well, but those have given up many of their secrets. Death and aging may give up theirs as well. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

people lived incredibly long lives-"as old as Methusula" could mean that something is as many as 972 years old. The Bible says that God grew weary of grappling with
men for so long and imposed an expiration date of about 70 years. People have been trying to extend those years ever since.
We are fascinated with stories of the incredibly old, particularly when those very old individuals have exceedingly sharp minds. French woman Jeanne Calment caused the previously accepted "ultimate
limit" of 120 years to be re-evaluated when she died at a well-documented 122 years and 164 days in 1997 (Allard, 1998), and it seems the entire world celebrated comedian
George Burns attainment of age 100 before dying. There has been an "explosion" of the number of individuals reaching the age of 100
in the most developed countries of the world, most notably England and Wales. There, "the number of persons attaining age 100 increased from 183 in 1950 to 1971 in
1990" (Allard, 1998; p. PG). Average life expectancy has increased in this century greatly beyond that of those preceding, but that increase can be attributed mostly to better ways
of treating infections and communicable diseases that often took the lives of younger adults. Death remains much more a mystery than does the
physiological aspects of aging, particularly now that the brain is giving up some of its "secrets" surrounding the still-mysterious process. Research into the causes of Alzheimers disease has revealed
that those who have died with the disease present have greatly altered brain cell structure in specific areas of the brain. Sclerosis develops around neurons, apparently preventing them from
