ways? It is a difficult question to answer mostly because liberators often have to take action that makes them appear tyrannical. A liberator is someone who frees people, who helps
them, and is generally perceived as a good guy whereas a tyrant is someone who is a cruel, authoritarian leader. One can begin to see how the two designations may
be confused. First, it should be said that a liberator can be a tyrant and vice versa. This is because there are personality types like Napoleon Bonaparte who appear to
be concerned with themselves and act like tyrants, but in reality also liberate people. Of course, much is subject to interpretation but when interpreting moments in history, figures may be
perceived as either positive or negative. On balance, it seems as if Cromwell did more good than bad. He was a true liberator. Yet, this idea was not prevalent at
the time that Cromwell ruled. Many of the people detested him because he was responsible for the cruel death of Charles I, but of course, his actions must be interpreted
in context. Howell & Richardson (1993) write: "Cromwell, the liberator of a degraded and enslaved Irish peasantry, was an incongruous image that would not develop until the 1860s..." (p.188). Some
support for the notion that Cromwell would be seen as a liberator comes forth from a nineteenth century source. Lamartine & Lamartine (1886) refer to a remark where Charles I
was referred to as a tyrant but Cromwell was thought to be a liberator. What made Cromwell a true liberator? A bit about the mans background, accomplishments and so forth
