you were to walk around asking random people, you would be hard-pressed to find someone who did not know the story of Old Yeller, someone who didnt enjoy it or
someone who didnt cry" (Walls, 2003). It is a relatively simple film, about simpler times. It is a film about a dog and a boy and presents the viewer with
not only a heart wrenching tale, but a relatively realistic look at life in the years following the Civil War. The following paper presents a brief summary of the film
and then discusses its historical portrayal of Texas and the nation perhaps as well. Summary In this story we have a mother, a father, and two boys, one
about 15 and one about 7. They live essentially in the middle of nowhere in Texas and apparently have quite a bit of land it would seem. They are poor
people and the father, who was once a Confederate soldier in the Civil War, must leave the family for some time to make money on a cattle drive. This puts
the oldest boy in charge of the family as the father leaves them to their rural condition. Shortly after the father leaves a dog arrives and essentially wreaks havoc on
a fence and seems to be nothing but a nuisance. The young boy, however, has attached himself to the dog for he has always wanted a dog in light of
the fact he has no friends. However, the family cannot truly even afford to feed a dog, indicating they are truly poor. The elder boy is incredibly angry and
upset with the dog and his actions and does not care that his younger brother is attached to him. The older brother, Travis, would rather see that "ole yeller dog"
