exemplify strength and give hope to people in contemporary times. Many people in fact read the bible for inspiration and certainly, the types of characters who have overcome obstacles provide
a sense that anything is possible. Three such larger than life individuals are Nehemiah, Esther and Daniel. Each, in their own way, have suffered, but they had also demonstrated that
human beings are resilient and can overcome dangerous situations. Above all, their example of prayer and faith is a comfort to readers. All three characters named are found in the
Old Testament. The book of Nehemiah begins at the start of the twentieth year (Nehemiah 1:1). The book of Esther is found right after Nehemiah so the historical settings are
similar. Daniel comes much later. The book of Daniel begins in "the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah " (Daniel 1:1). While perhaps Daniel lived much
later, the three larger than life biblical characters may be compared and contrasted, as they each provide similar meaning for readers. They each had similar challenges, or at least one
can say that they each had very large challenges. These three characters were integral to the historical record and they did have significant influences on the society in which they
lived. Daniel was challenged throughout his life by a number of circumstances, one of which was having been thrown to the lions. This is a famous bible story and perhaps
now acts as a metaphor, but Daniel actually did face the dangerous lions. He met with physical challenges-the lions-- as well as challenges related to politics. He was also challenged
in respect to his own status as someone who was a prophet in his own right. Not everyone liked him and in fact, he had a number of enemies. Hence,
