times of humankind but that is interspersed with examples of events that are so extreme they must be either accepted as they are written or interpreted as symbolism for a
greater purpose. They can only be accepted in a literal sense if the reader believes completely in Divine Intervention; that anything, no matter how illogical to the human mind, is
possible because God can make it so. Or, they must be looked upon as stories filled with symbolism to teach a lesson to humans. The third option when reading the
Old Testament is to consider the stories a combination of the two: a literal account that is filled with symbolism so the message stays the same through the ages. The
Book of Jonah is no exception. The Book of Jonah recounts the story of a recalcitrant messenger. Jonah is a prophet who
is called upon by the Lord to preach to Nineveh; to help them change their evil ways. If they do not change and call upon the Lord, He will destroy
the city. Jonah does not want them saved; they have inflicted harm on the Israelites and in Jonahs mind they should perish so he runs away from the Lord rather
than obey the command. A series of events finds Jonah in the belly of a great fish where he prays; he is spit up from the fish and once again
commanded by God to preach to Nineveh. Reluctantly, like a spoiled child, Jonah goes and give the message. They repent. They are saved. Jonah is very angry with God and
