seen as a very symbolic story that relates to the death of the Old South and the emergence of the New South. The following paper examines how the character of
Emily is a symbol of the Old South. Old South and A Rose for Emily by Faulkner The Old South and
the New South were places that existed prior to and after the Civil War in the south. The traditions, the social expectations and classes and wealth all changed with the
end of the Civil War and the changes that new directions brought. In Faulkners story the main character, Emily, is a woman raised in the Old South with the ideals
and the social expectations of the Old South. Her father, when he was alive, clearly controlled her and her life, "We remembered all the young men her father had driven
away, and we knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which had robbed her, as people will" (Faulkner). In this, a time when her father
had died, the reader recognizes that Emily must always live in that Old South because of her father and his demands. But, at the same time she was a burden
to her town because she did not move forward in the times, into the New South. Towards the beginning of the story
the reader, through symbolism and imagery, subtly gets the clear understanding that she lives in the Old South as the narrator describes her house, saying, "Miss Emilys house was left,
