Religious autonomy is the reason for most of the conflict in the Middle East that raged for thousands of years and escalated with the formation of the Jewish state following World War II. migrants called the raskolniki, or Old Believers. The confluence of history, belief and migration for this religious group resulted in their continued cultural identity, practices and beliefs.
Old Believers settled in Alberta because they refused to submit to a change of religious beliefs and cultural practices. Beginning in the Seventeenth Century, Old Believers
in Alberta have been able to maintain the pure customs and rituals practiced by their ancestors. This is viewed as essential to not only to the daily functioning of the
Old Believer community, but to the very existence of the community as a whole. The student may note that the Old Believers
began leaving Russia in 1667. This began as a revolt of traditionalists at The Church Council of 1667. Certain clergy denounced new changes and omissions in the new editions of
the Psalter prepared by the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, Nikon, who began to modify traditional beliefs in favor of a Greek approach to Christianity in 1652. Nikon not
only changed religious practices, such as forbidding ritualistic signs as the making of the finger cross to show the synthesis of God and Man and replacement of the eight pointed
