tells what it was like to be a slave, first in Africa, then in the New World. This paper uses Equianos narrative to compare and contrast his experience of slavery on both continents. Discussion The contrast between slavery in Africa and in the West Indies is enormous. In Africa, though it would be unfair and inaccurate to trivialize the experience of slavery by depicting it as harmless or just, it cost the slave traders some personal risk to obtain their slaves. Unlike the owners in the New World, "[W]hen a trader wants slaves he applies to a chief for them and tempts him with his wares" (Equiano). Equiano says that the chief often allows himself to be persuaded in this way and his people are taken away, but at other times a "war" ensues, in which the traders have to fight to obtain the slaves (Equiano). If they lose and are capture, theyre put to death. This gives the slave trader a significant personal risk in capturing the slave; this is not the case in the Indies. Then too, if a man is enslaved in Africa, his captivity is not as onerous as it is in the New World. Equiano tells of warriors who were captured in battle and enslaved by his people, and reveals that the slaves were not forced to work any harder than anyone else in the community "even their master" (Equiano). In addition, their "food, clothing and lodging" were nearly equal to that of their master, the only exception being that they did not eat with their masters (Equiano).
