itself, as well as against budgeting and financial concerns. Elevators are generally considered to be a safe way of transporting both people and freight, and this is partly due to
the constant refinement which the basic designs undergo, and increased attention being paid to safety factors and fail-safes.
Hydraulic elevators, which are most commonly found in buildings up to six storeys tall, can operate at up to fifty feet
per minute: the lifting mechanism is different from the overhead hoists used in geared and gearless elevators. Instead, the elevator is powered by a piston within a cylinder: oil is
pumped into the latter to move the piston, which then lifts the cab, and the oil is gradually released to allow it to descend. It is evident that if there
is a failure in any part of the hydraulic system, then safety will be compromised: in addition, one must also take into account the repercussions of oil leakage in other
areas, such as the impact on the surrounding environment. Even small quantities of leaked oil can result in widespread areas of pollution which are difficult to clean, and which may
