people are diagnosed with Alzheimers or some other form of dementia. This is a terrible illness that slowly takes the patients mind away. Short-term memory is severely impaired, as just
one example. These patients may forget how to do things they have done all their lives like make a cup of coffee or tea. They need help Fortunately, there are
a number of options for help for patients. Home health care is one option that has a helper go into the home to help the patient with dressing or eating
or whatever is needed. The goal is to keep these adults in their own homes as long as possible. There are several states that have created an Office of Public
Guardian for Incapacitated Adults through their Legislature. Other states have included guardianship services in other social services programs, such as mental health. New York State does not have an Office
for Public Guardian. Instead these services are offered through their mental hygiene laws. This essay discusses public guardianship, the Office of Public Guardian for Incapacitated Adults, and conservatorship. It also
proposes a commission that would develop a recommendation for the State Legislature to create such an office. It further describes transformational leadership and how that may facilitate the workings of
