will avoid the inevitable consequences of having committed murder. This is incredibly traumatic for George, but it is not where the greater tragedy lies. Examination of this classic work reveals that the tragedy lies in the fact that George is too traumatized to consider the possibility of forming another friendship and pursuing the dream of owning a small farm with Candy, as well as Crooks. The beginning of the narrative signals several important things about Lennie and George. First of all, it relates that Lennie is incredibly strong, but mentally disabled. Gentle and kind, he depends on his friend George for both guidance and protection. Lennies love for touching and petting soft things, such as small animals and peoples hair, is what inevitably causes trouble, as he will always inadvertently use too much pressure and damage what he touches. George complains about how much better his life would be without Lennie, but he obviously cares deeply for his friend. George and Lennie find work as farm hands and they meet Candy, an aging ranch hand, and Crooks, a black stable hand. Both Candy and Crooks are intrigued by George and Lennies dream tone day own a farm. To work collectively on land that they owned would be paradise to these men, as this would not only offer them security, but would allow them to establish relational bonds with their co-workers, such as the bond of friendship that binds Lennie and George. In other words, it is not simply the idea of the farm that lures Candy and Crooks, as they are also attracted by the possibility of friendship and communal ties of brotherhood. On hearing of their dream, Candy says, "Spose I went with you guys...I aint much good, but I could cook and tend the chickens ...
