In a lecture provided by a professor, Ian Johnston, it is noted that the beginning of the play if very important for its clarity: "First, the citizens have
enormous respect, even love, for Oedipus. They acknowledge not only his political power (which they have given him), but also his pre-eminence among all human beings for wisdom, especially in
dealing with things they dont understand...Second, we see in Oedipus a person of enormous self-assurance and self-confidence, a man who is willing to take on full responsibility for dealing with
the crisis, a task which he clearly accepts as his own unique challenge" (Johnston). In this one sees that he is highly regarded by the people, he is an
intelligent man, a man of integrity, and a man who is willing to seek answers, even if those answers point to him as the problem. However, Johnston also states that
Oedipus is also a man who is somewhat full of himself, aware of his own intelligence and worth and a bit of an egotistical individual.
