is a principled man who is anguished over the devastating plague that has befallen his beloved subjects of Thebes. Visibly distraught by their anguish, the King reassures his tortured
people, "My search has found one way to treat our disease... I have sent Creon, my brother-in-law, to the prophetic oracle of Apollo, to find out what action or speech,
if any, I may rescue Thebes" (Sophocles 4). Upon his return, Creon informs Oedipus that the plague is atonement for the murder of his predecessor, King Laius, and that
Apollo decrees, "We must punish those who killed him - whoever they may be" (Sophocles 7). This has imbued Oedipus with a greater sense of purpose than he has
ever known. He vows, "I will begin afresh. I will bring it all to light... I shall be the defender of Thebes, and Apollos champion, too. I
shall rid us of this pollution, not for the sake of a distant relative, but for my own sake" (Sophocles 10). But not everyone shares Oedipuss zeal for revealing the
truth behind Laiuss murder and his quest for bring the person responsible to justice. When the blind oracle Tiresias rejects the Kings plea for assistance in his crusade, Oedipus
demands to know why, and is shocked to hear the words, "You are the murderer, you are the unholy defilement of this land" (Sophocles 23). Naturally outraged that the
prophet would make such an allegation, Tiresias refuses to recant, stating, "The truth with all its strength is in me" (Sophocles 23). A lesser man might have been stopped
dead in his tracks after hearing such a prophecy, but not Oedipus. Hearing Tiresiass words only made him more committed to unveiling the truth no matter what it may
