are still performed. This paper considers what the two plays Oedipus the King and Medea tell us about leadership and kingship. Discussion What do Oedipus and Medea say about leadership
and kingship? The short answer is that being a person in a position of power can be dangerous. The long answer requires that we look at whats happening in these
plays. We soon find that they are somewhat similar, in that they both deal with great loss, great crimes, and death. From them we might easily conclude that sometimes its
better not to be a king or a leader, because terrible things happen to people in positions of power. But this is the nature of tragedy; in fact, one of
the definitions of tragedy is that it looks at the events that befall powerful and important people. When a small, unimportant man fails to make a success of his business,
we might find his plight moving or perhaps even recognizable, but hardly tragic. It is too ordinary, too mundane; it could happen to any one of us. But when a
king falls, or a princess fails, then it becomes a tragic event, because these people are significant. They are powerful and influential, and their fate affects many others. As we
watch these plays we see not only human frailty, but the workings of fate. Consider Oedipus: he killed his father and married his mother; even though he did this unknowingly,
the punishment is no less than if he had committed these crimes deliberately. When the truth is revealed, Jocasta (Oedipuss wife/mother) takes her own life and Oedipus blinds himself and
leaves Thebes in disgrace (Sophocles). Likewise, to get back at her husband Jason for his infidelity, Medea murders their children (Euripides). She is a figure of towering passion and insane
