should be less than men in society, how they were of little significance and how they possessed little, if any, power. In Sophocles Oedipus trilogy and Aristophanes Lysistrata one sees
many different ways of depicting women. The following paper examines and analyzes these presentations. Oedipus and Lysistrata: Women In the Oedipus trilogy one could well argue that the
primary women would be Oedipus wife/mother, Jocasta and his daughters Antigone and Ismene. For the most part Jocasta is relatively insignificant aside from the fact that she is Oedipus wife
as well as mother. But, she is a loyal and traditional woman. She tells Oedipus, when he is almost at the end of the first book, "Tis for thy sake
I advise thee for the best" (Sophocles). This is a depiction of a very good wife and woman, allowing the man to do what he needs to do and essentially
living her life for him, hoping for only the good of a man rather than herself. This is also evidenced in the characters of Antigone and Ismene. While Antigone,
in the final book of the trilogy, is fighting in a mans world and could be argued as a strong and independent woman, she is ultimately fighting for her brother,
a man. She is fighting to ensure that he has a proper burial and she has no thoughts for herself. Ismene simply wants to be a good woman and not
get involved in the affairs of a man. Regardless of their approach to their society, both are clearly at the mercy of a mans world and are clearly under some
assumption that a mans world is more important than their own. Lysistrata is quite different for she is a woman who is strong, wise, and intelligent. She knows that
