comedic characters in Sophocles Oedipus trilogy and Aristophanes Lysistrata. .The paper also examines the importance, from the perspective of Aristotle and tragedy, of Oedipus as opposed to Lysistrata. Oedipus
and Lysistrata: Tragic Hero In the Oedipus trilogy Oedipus is a man who is destined, no matter what he does, to fulfill a prophecy wherein he kills his father and
marries his mother. He attempts, at every turn, to avoid this truth but destiny/ fate are against him. He is a relatively good man and as such one can see
him clearly as a tragic individual who has no power against such destiny. In this one can also well relate him to an average man which is important in a
tragic hero for a tragic hero must have human qualities that are not perfect. There is nothing lighthearted or humorous about his story. In the story of Lysistrata one
is presented with the power and intelligence and wisdom of a woman who realizes that if the women of her realm, and the battling realm, withhold sex from their men
they can stop the men from going off to war and would ultimately bring some peace. The premise of the story is a tragic one, in that it involves the
never ending cycle of men going off to war and dying and the loss of the women and families they leave behind. But, the sexual elements of the story make
it quite comedic. But, through comedy many truths are often revealed as it is often noted how people really only laugh at things that are ultimately painful for themselves or
