and Hamlet, and these assumptions not only define how women perceive their roles, but shape their actions. For example, Gertrude, Queen of Denmark, is a character who seems to
accept the assumption that women do the bidding of men, and that their decisions are made by the men in their lives. When her husband and Hamlets father dies,
she waits little time before marrying her late husbands brother, thus retaining her status as the Queen of Denmark. Defined by both her role and her perception of the
men in her life, Gertrude has little to say about her own behavior, even when challenged by her own son. Similarly, Oedipus mother, Jocasta, seems to accept the assumption that
her decisions will also be made by the men in her life. Initially, she marries King Laius, and though a blind profit stated that he would be killed by
his son, his conceit leads to Jocastas pregnancy. Laius fears the statements of the profit, and so binds his sons feet and leaves him in the wilderness to die.
Jocastas acceptance of her role and of the death of her son is fundamental to the actions of the play. When Oedipus kills Laius and marries Jocasta, she
