The following paper examines and defines what makes a tragic hero and then examines the characters and stories of Antigone and Oedipus. Tragic Hero
The first question posed by the student involves taking a modern day tragic hero and placing then in the ancient Greek world. A modern day tragic hero
could well be the character of Don in the film 28 Weeks later. In this film Don is faced with a world of zombies wherein he saves himself thinking his
wife is doomed, only to find she is still alive, though a carrier for the disease. If he were placed in the days of ancient Greece one could well imagine
his story differently as a man who fought against a horde of invaders and in a moment of weakness running away which demonstrates his human weaknesses, critical in a tragic
hero. His end would clearly come in the form of his wife having become one of the invaders, and taking revenge on him, perhaps righteously, and killing him for abandoning
her. Antigone The second question involves characters in the story of Antigone. The characters under discussion are Antigone, Ismene, Creon and
Haemon. Antigones character is revealed perhaps first as she speaks with her sister, Ismene, and in this both of their characters are revealed. Antigone is determined in saving the corpse
of her brother despite the fact that it means engaging in a mans world of politics and policy. Her sister Ismene, is the typical female who feels a womans place
