prophecy ultimately catches up with him and leads to his demise. He is a relatively admirable man, a man who tries to do good, yet ultimately falls to something he
has no control over. The following paper examines how he stands strong as a tragic hero. Oedipus: Tragic Hero One critic notes, "If we give ourselves up to
a full sympathy with the hero, there is no question that the Oedipus Rex fulfills the function of a tragedy, and arouses fear and pity in the highest degree" (Barstow).
This says a lot, and clearly claims that Oedipus is a tragic hero. And, it should be understood that the ideal or definition of a tragic hero was presented long
ago by Aristotle, whom Barstow bases their argument on. Aristotle essentially argued that "the tragic hero...is described as not eminently good and just, not completely under the guidance of true
reason, but as falling through some great error, flaw of character, rather than through vice of depravity" He incites pity and sorrow on the part of the viewer or the
reader because they are not a bad human being, just a human being who was ultimately done wrong some how. Oedipus is
a man who has a prophecy following him, and he is a man who is relatively clueless about what is going on. He inadvertently kills his father and marries his
mother, which is what the prophecy told. He, however, had no idea for he assumed his parents were the people who raised him. If this were not enough, one notes
