so many of them are still relevant. The Trojan Women, for instance, about what happens to women when their men are killed and the enemy invades their country could apply
to a number of situations, including Iraq. It seems that we as a species never learn: we cannot seem to stop waging war, and therefore, the women who have to
deal with loss are still with us. Oedipus Rex has perhaps less bearing on life today, but the emotions it deals with, including an arrogant leader and his downfall, have
modern parallels. The student will need to be familiar with the play to make a successful argument about it, but in actual fact its very simple. Laius, the King of
Thebes, and his wife Jocasta have a son, but the oracle says that the boy will kill his father (Sophocles, ). Horrified, the king and queen send the baby away
to be left to die in the wilderness, but the kind-hearted shepherd who is supposed to carry out the instructions cant do it and instead gives the infant to another
shepherd, who takes the boy to Polybus, king of Corinth, who raises it as his own (Sophocles ). When Oedipus is a young man, a drunken party guest tells
him hes not the kings son but when he questions Polybus, the latter assures him he is. But Oedipus still has doubts so he goes to the Oracle at Delphi
