Essay / Research Paper Abstract
3 pages in length. Teiresias' significance in Oedipus and Antigone speaks to the importance of prophecy as it exists in Greek mythology. Teiresias, a famous Thebian prophet, gained his special powers as a trade-off for the blindness Athena cast upon him for accidentally seeing her bathing. Now bestowed with the ability to prognosticate, Teiresias's foretelling becomes an instrumental component in many characters' lives, not the least of which were found in Oedipus and Antigone. The messages Teiresias deliver are not always what the recipients wanted to hear; however, the truth that resides in his disclosures often seeks to alter a given character's entire existence for the better, which establishes Teiresias' most significant contribution to each play. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

knowledge by prophecy, however, unlike Laius, who was given the foresight to know what the future held for him and his family, Oedipus found out after the fact what transpired
from his actions. An oracle informed the king that his then unborn child would do nothing but bring him despair, as the grown son would ultimately come to kill
his father and marry his mother. When Oedipus was born, he was immediately abandoned on Mount Cithaeron, where a shepherd rescued the near dead infant and brought him back
to health. The oracles premonitions prove to be correct as the story unfolds, ending appropriately with Oedipus inflicting torture upon himself and seeking exile after a lifetime of grievous
occurrences. It is Oedipus, not his father nor mother, who is destined to suffer lifes tortures that would eventually bring him to commit murder and incest. Interesting to
