reader could relate to, sympathize with, and root for. He was a man whom the reader could see was honorable and a man who tried to do what was right.
But, in the end he was faced with tragedy every step of the way. In the following paper we examine the story of Oedipus and illustrate that because he was
a classic tragic hero, according to Aristotle, his story was a tragedy. Oedipus Story and the Tragedy Within In first understanding how Oedipus was a tragic hero, and
his story a tragedy, we must first understand what makes a tragic hero. Aristotle was a man who defined the tragic hero more than adequately. And, it has been Aristotles
definition which has stood the test of time and stood to represent all that defines a tragic hero. First off the audience must like the hero. They must sympathize
with him, and see him as an average man to some degree. But, at the same time there should be elements of the character which make him a hero in
the first place. Perhaps the individual has a great sense of honor and is incredibly brave, even at the cost of his own life. He must be perhaps stronger than
others, or more intelligent than others. In short, there must be some element which somehow sets him above the average man, but yet still maintains human qualities. The most
important aspect of the human qualities within a tragic hero is that which indicates some weakness. The audience cannot wholly support a hero that does not have some fault, some
weakness, which allows them to relate to the hero. And, that individual must recognize their weakness, and somehow rise above it. In the end, a tragic hero is faced
