aspect of his story, however, is told in "Oedipus the King." In this story one learns of his struggles and his journey into darkness. The following apper analyzes the character
of Oedipus in Sophocles work. Oedipus In the story of Oedipus one learns that Oedipus is part of a prophecy. He is told that he will, one day,
kill his father and marry his mother. Unbeknownst to Oedipus, who does not tell his mother or father this prophecy, the people he believes to be his parents are not.
They adopted him as an infant and as such it seems that, without Oedipus knowledge of his true ancestry, he may well fulfill the prophecy. Oedipus, upon hearing the prophecy
leaves his homeland so that he will not commit this horrible pair of acts. Oedipus, in leaving home, believes he is doing right. He is very noble in these
respects because he is doing everything possible not to fulfill the prophecy. However, inadvertently he does kill his real father and then marry that victims wife, who is his mother.
He is not even aware that the women he married is the widow of a man he killed, his father. He begins to hear things which indicate that the
truth about who killed his wifes husband is being uncovered. He shows himself again as noble by insisting that justice be done and someone find out the truth about the
murder. As more and more information is gathered Oedipus is slowly beginning to understand the real truth of the situation. Yet, even as he is discovering these truths he shows
himself as noble because he wants to know the truth. As a powerful leader he could have called off any further investigation when things started to point to him as
