journey, and each of them has a journey that will make them wiser and happier in the end. In "The Odyssey" we have a king who has incredible adventures for twenty some years. In "Inferno" we have a life altering, and religious, journey towards knowledge and enlightenment. The following paper presents an examination of the two classics, as they involve the theme of journey, and then presents a comparison and contrast of the two. The Odyssey The Odyssey is about King Odysseus. He is apparently a good and kind man, as well as a good and kind king. In the beginning of the story of his journey we see how "Odysseus...leaves his devoted wife and child and, according to Homer, joins the Achaeans in their brutal attack on Troy, where he supposedly spends the next ten years fighting" (Anonymous The Odyssey summary.htm). He is engaged in this fight because he is obligated. He demonstrates himself to be a brave and victorious fighter. The real journey, however, begins when he starts home. This part of the journey will also take him approximately ten years and will be filled with many challenges and perils. His will, his integrity, his strength, his morals, and his courage will constantly be tested. Without going into great detail, and there is a large amount of it in this classic, we present a brief overview of the perils he faced. We note the brief descriptions of these perils in his own discussion of them to his wife Penelope. He has returned to her, after twenty years, slain her suitors, and now tells her of his journey home: "He told her all about the Cyclops and how he had punished him for having so ruthlessly eaten his brave comrades...a hurricane carried him out to sea again; ...
