cultures we are often given more information about a society in literature than we are in historical documentation of the time period. Through simple or complex literature we see what
society was like, and what the rules in society were. In Homers Odyssey we see a powerful fictional piece, but also a piece that illustrates some of the social expectations
of the time, perhaps offering the reader of the time a behavioral manual in the ways of society. In the following paper we examine the Odyssey as it presents us
with a behavioral manual of the time. Odyssey and Society Homers Odyssey presents us with many subjects that could be examined in terms of society and the laws
of the day. It illustrates various realities, always with the influence of the gods, that touch on conditions such as friendship, love, honor, bravery, and many other social conditions. Like
other ancient texts, there is something to be learned concerning the social conditions of the time. In better understanding what the Odyssey has to offer we break the examination down
into marriage, religion/gods, revenge, rituals, and reputation. Marriage Clearly Ulysses story involves the condition of marriage, for he is a man who spends half of his 20 years away
from his family trying to get back to his wife. There is a sense of understanding, concerning marriages, as it relates to the society, which states that a woman should
