There is aggression that is inherent in the male that is present both in war and in making love. In looking at Homers characters in the Odyssey and the Iliad, one can see such traits erupt. After all, Homer becomes intensely involved in war, but he does not neglect the love lives of his protagonists. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is the protagonist. He is quite intelligent and sufficient in terms of strength. Thus, he is a hero of sorts. Although he is not the most likable person in the world he is certainly someone who is quite capable of living life to its fullest and accomplishing much. In a sense, he is the quintessential manly man. On one hand, he is a marvelous lover and on the other, he is the great warrior. Odysseus in a way is a caricature because of his prowess. Yet, there is much beneath the surface of this three dimensional character, and while there are a lot of traits he possesses that is less than admirable, one thing is clear. He exhibits loyalty and trustworthiness. He respects the gods and their powers and works with them well. This is a trait of heroes that many in fact look for today. Above all, Odysseus is portrayed as a true warrior. He is certainly warrior-like and he kills many people in the course of his journey. The killings involve war, but sometimes they are related to love as he kills his wifes suitors. The start of the book takes one through his journeys during the Trojan war. ...
