to write an imaginary dialogue between Odysseus and Socrates, it would probably be useful to consider the most significant characteristics of the two, in terms of the way that they
interact with others. Homers Odysseus, for instance, is not a philosopher so much as a man of action, but he discovers wisdom in the course of his quest and can
therefore not be perceived as the kind of hero-figure whose heroism is defined solely through physical strength. Socrates is perhaps best known for his form of philosophical questioning, which by
exposing flaws in argument and belief systems so enraged the authorities in Athens, but as we can see from Platos Apology, Socrates did not develop this methodology solely to confuse
and annoy others, but as part of his genuine and lifelong search for the Truth, which search was at the heart of all his dealings with others.
The meeting between the two, therefore, should reflect the
ways in which they have, respectively, sought for wisdom in the course of their lives, and how close they felt they came to finding it. The setting for the meeting
is less important than the conversation which takes place, and since the two individuals are from periods in Greek history several hundred years apart, one would probably have to assume
that a convenient time machine was available, or that perhaps they have encountered each other in the Underworld, after death.
