speak of one who is not perfect, and thus encourages the reader or viewer to sympathize with them. Yet they are also individuals who struggle to become better, to become
wiser and to be more humble. There is another aspect to the tragic hero, however, where one can see a character as an individual with a tragic flaw (hubris: wherein
the hero thinks he is better than the gods), or as an individual who is essentially suffering because of his fate. The following paper argues that Odysseus was not a
man with the tragic flaw of hubris, but rather a man struggling against the fates that were laid down before him. Odysseus As mentioned, one who suffers from
the tragic flaw of hubris is one who suffers because he set himself as high, or higher, than the powers of the gods that control the universe. In the very
beginning of the Odyssey we see the gods, and goddesses, discussing Odysseus. There is no indication in their conversations that Odysseus is anything but a loyal and noble man who
is merely suffering at the hands of one particular goddess at the time. This is evident in the following: "Tell me, O muse, of that ingenious hero who travelled far
and wide after he had sacked the famous town of Troy. Many cities did he visit, and many were the nations with whose manners and customs he was acquainted; moreover
he suffered much by sea while trying to save his own life and bring his men safely home; but do what he might he could not save his men" (Homer
