noble man and a righteous leader who encountered many trials and tribulations in his stories. Homers The Iliad and The Odyssey present the reader with two different time periods in
Odysseus life. In The Iliad Odysseus is a warrior fighting in the Trojan War. In The Odyssey he is engaged in his 10 year journey back home after the war.
In light of the different plots involved it comes as no surprise that the way in which Odysseus is presented differs in the two works. The following paper compares and
contrasts Odysseus in the two stories. Odysseus: The Iliad and The Odyssey In The Iliad Odysseus is essentially a solider. While he is, in his homeland, a king,
in the Trojan War he is not the supreme leader. As such the reader sees his character as one who is noble and follows orders. He is not irate and
irrational at times, which seems to be the position of the main characters. His role is not the lead role and in light of this the impression one gets of
Odysseus is a loyal and noble soldier. In The Odyssey the entire story is framed around Odysseus himself. He is the main character and from this perspective the reader
sees the development of his character because this is the focus of the story and his journey. One reads as Odysseus moves through one challenge after another, one struggle after
another. In the Odyssey Odysseus seems to be more of a real person than in The Iliad because it is about his development. He has finished his duty in
the war and only desires to get home. The reader is introduced to his strengths as well as weaknesses for he need not be a supporting character that is stable.
