has just spent 10 years of his life fighting in the Trojan War and now it is time for him to get home. What should have taken, perhaps, less than a year took him 10 years to accomplish. Homers Odyssey presents the story of Odysseus journey home and his arrival home, wherein he sets things right and is reunited with his wife and son. The following paper examines one particular Book of the story, Book XI, wherein Odysseus finds himself in the Underworld. The paper examines the importance of this particular chapter as it relates to the rest of the story. Odysseus Journey to the Underworld Just prior to Odysseus journey to the Underworld we see that he is essentially being held captive by Circe. Odysseus and his men want to go home and Odysseus finally approaches Circe to ask her to allow them that opportunity. He tells her that his men keep hounding him every time she is not around and she seems to believe that it likely time they left if that is what Odysseus wants. However, there is something else he must do before he goes home it seems. Up until this point Odysseus has been in many different dangerous situations as he attempts to go home. This particular point in the story is approximately halfway through such dangers and journeys and as such it is halfway through his development as a character it would seem. He must now go to the Underworld and meet with a great prophet, Teiresias. He will meet other people in the Underworld as well, people who will further his development as a human being and a character.
