of Odysseus as being a figure of strength and heroism. However, we rarely stop and think if he was a good person or not. We know he was a leader
of people, a father and a husband. We know he was the victim of many things beyond his control. But, was he a good person? With that question in mind
the following paper examines some parts of Homers work, discussing whether Odysseus was a good person or not. Odysseus In the beginning of Homers work we see the
gods and goddesses discussing Odysseus (or Ulysses). When approached one god states that Odysseus has been good, but also bad, as it relates to the gods: "How can I forget
Ulysses than whom there is no more capable man on earth, nor more liberal in his offerings to the immortal gods that live in heaven? Bear in mind, however, that
Neptune is still furious with Ulysses for having blinded an eye of Polyphemus king of the Cyclopes" (Homer Book I). In this we see that Homer is a faithful and
capable man that worships the gods as they should be worshipped. We also see that he has battled against the Cyclopes. This, however, does not tell us if he is
a good person or a bad person, only that he is religious. In another section, much further along in the story, we see Odysseus trying to conceal his identity. This
is the only reason, in this particular section, why he feels that he should not hurt Irus too badly. But, in the midst of battle he smashes in Irus skull
which was a far worse hit then he had originally planned (Homer Book XVIII). Now, it should be understood that he was doing this so that he could hide in
