Still, he is able to command the loyalty of his men and it is only with their help that he survives his great adventure. This paper argues that it is Odysseuss relationship with his friends that illustrates one of Homers main points, which is that even heroes need help at times and that asking for it doesnt make them weaker. Discussion We might say that Odysseus has an unfair advantage over most adventurers, since he has Athena, a goddess, on his side. She says that her heart "breaks for Odysseus, that seasoned veteran cursed by fate so long" (Homer, I: 57-58) and asks Zeus why he wont allow Odysseus to find his way home. Zeus says, in effect, hey, its not me, its Poseidon (God of the Sea) whos set against him because Odysseus blinded Poseidons son, Polyphemus (Homer, I: 76-96). But, Zeus says, Poseidon will "let his anger go. How can he stand his ground against the will of all the gods at once-one god alone?" (Homer, I: 92-94). Thus Athena takes up Odysseuss cause. However, she proves a tricky ally and abandons Odysseus, a fact he mentions when he finally gets home to Ithaca: "But I do know this: you were kind to me in the war years, / so long as we men of Achaea soldiered on at Troy. / But once wed sacked King Priams craggy city, / boarded ship, and a god dispersed the fleet, / from the on, daughter of Zeus, I never saw you" (Homer, XIII: 356-360). Athena was interested in the sack of Troy because of the insult done to her by Paris, the citys prince; we can argue that she was only interested in Odysseus as the instrument of the citys fall, not for his own sake.
