Discussion We might say that Odysseus has an unfair advantage over most adventurers, since he has Athena, a goddess, on his side. She says that her heart "breaks for Odysseus,
that seasoned veteran cursed by fate so long" (Homer, I: 57-58) and asks Zeus why he wont allow Odysseus to find his way home. Zeus says, in effect, hey, its
not me, its Poseidon (God of the Sea) whos set against him because Odysseus blinded Poseidons son, Polyphemus (Homer, I: 76-96). But, Zeus says, Poseidon will "let his anger go.
How can he stand his ground against the will of all the gods at once-one god alone?" (Homer, I: 92-94). Thus Athena takes up Odysseuss cause. However, she proves a
tricky ally and abandons Odysseus, a fact he mentions when he finally gets home to Ithaca: "But I do know this: you were kind to me in the war years,
