SA137Odt.rtf Golden Boy is an American story about a young, Italian man who is multi-talented. Ironically, the boy can play violin just as well as he can fight the kid on the street corner and in choosing a vocation, he goes with his latter talent. In some ways, this story is about choices that everyone has to make. Does one become a history professor because he is dedicated to academia, or does a person overlook his own interests and degree to become a stockbroker because there is more money in it? Similarly, many actors have gone to Ivy League schools, but actors are not required to and thus, some people look down upon the trade. Boxing is a sport that is in some way stigmatized as an activity that is associated with poor youth who try to get out of the ghetto, and it is boxing that makes up the details of Golden Boy. In the tradition of OHenry, Odets includes much irony. Although he has some boxing success, the protagonist Joe Bonaparte hurts his hands enough that he can no longer play the violin. In this work, Joe makes choices. Should he forgo a lucrative boxing career for the violin? The wrestling with that decision is merely a part of the play. Joe of course compromises himself, ignores an interest that appeals to people in the upper classes, and instead goes after fame and money. But there are other issues brought to light by some of the minor characters that have nothing to do with status. ...
