Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) present a number of concerns for society. Not only can this maladaptive condition cause a variety of disruptive behaviors in the academic, social
and work aspects of an individuals life; our most frequent choice of addressing the problem often only complicates an already complicated situation. ADHD is a condition for which treatment
must begin at an early age in order to give the child the most chance for leading a life as a productive and contributing adult. This treatment can include
a number of approaches. Both drugs and behavioral modification techniques have proven useful. Occupational therapy, therapy which has been incorporated successfully even among elementary school age students, is
a critical component of this treatment regime as well. This therapy incorporates therapeutic and sensory integrative activities which are designed to optimize a childs ability to complete everyday tasks
such as playing, eating, dressing, going to school and even getting along with peers (U.S. Newswire, 2001). Much of the occupational therapy utilized
for ADHD treatment occurs in recognition of the sensory processing deficits which often characterize the condition. These deficits are attributable to both the physiological and behavioral problems associated with
the disease. There are, however, numerous questions regarding the physiological cause of Attention Deficit Disorder, its diagnosis, and treatment options. Some research indicates that the disorder is related
to glucose and the way it is processed in the brain (Perlman, 1996). There has also been a correlation of Attention Deficit Disorder with differences in thyroid hormone receptors.
