Research has also found that mothers of children with disabilities spend a great deal less time socializing or engaged in activities outside the home. As a result, the self-image suffers
and coping strategies may become weak. The extra demands placed on mothers of children with disabilities may negatively affect the parent-child relationship. At least one study found that a "nine-week
intervention program for parents of children with disabilities that was psychoeducational and supportive in nature" (Delitzer et al, 2002, p. 26) had positive effects on the parents. 2. Frame
a research problem The research problem identified by the investigators was what changes in self-image and coping strategies would occur as a result of participating in a short-term occupational therapy
intervention program called Bien Estar, a short-term psychosocial occupational therapy program. The program occurred over three years and consisted of group meetings during which time, women were encouraged to share
