in the nineteenth century, it would be under strict military control until 1985 when the regime would let go of its power and voluntarily hand it over to the civilian
leaders ("Brazil," 2005). Today, Brazil tries to effect both agricultural and industrial growth as it also exploits its natural resources and labor ("Brazil," 2005). Today, Brazil is a leader
in economic development in South America ("Brazil," 2005). That said, unequal income distribution plagues this successful nation ("Brazil," 2005). The current political problems affecting Brazil have
to do with three hurdles, according to a student, and these are the people, the government and the military. A student presents the following thesis: "Economic and political factors
are key contributors to Brazils current state of affairs because it is a Democracy today, however, its government is unstable and the fears of past regime failures have begun to
surface." In other words, Brazil would have a chance if it were not for its past that haunts the people. It is true that Brazil has instituted some democratic reforms
(Baiocchi, 2003). Yet, problems from the nations past invade the resolve of the people, and much of this is related to the military. The hurdles that the nation has to
jump over include the fact that the people cling to the past, the government has not gotten over the past, and the fact that the military was the problem with
