recognition as their male counterparts. The strides minority women have made in the workplace are significant; indeed; there is a considerable difference between the garment worker of the nineteenth century
and the corporate CEO of the 1990s. However, there still remain limitations as to the lengths minority women are allowed to go within the corporate world, in that the
glass ceiling is always looming overhead. Says Sheelagh Whittaker, president and chief executive officer of EDS Canada Ltd: "Ive always said that well have true equality when we have
as many incompetent women in positions as we have incompetent men" (Maley, 1997, p. 52). In response to the glass ceiling hindrance so prevalent in todays workplace, Diane McGarry
- chairwoman, CEO and president of Xerox Canada Inc. - prefers to think of it as being made of plastic "because plastic is even harder to break than glass" (Maley,
1997, p. 52). That only relatively few minority women have broken through the gender barriers from a century ago is indicative of the still stringent attitude society takes in
relation to minority women in the workplace. The rumblings of gender inequity were becoming quite apparent, inasmuch as minority women were not content with their predisposed lot in nineteenth century
life. Men were not ready, willing or able to recognize the inherent contribution minority women were able to make to the workplace, inasmuch as females were considered homemakers/mothers first
and foremost. Those who voiced a desire to break free of their oppressive lifestyles and become an integral component within the working world were scoffed at and ridiculed.
