They exist but never really live. Macon is a character who has enmeshed himself so stringently in routine and structure that to call him obsessive compulsive is merely
naming the apparent. In this way then, what the reader is treated to is an inside look at the life
of an obsessive compulsive man and how he is able to truly come alive inside. It is only once he does this that he can let go of the
structure and the chains which have bound him for so very long and really live. Evidence of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in the Character of Macon
Macon is a very interesting and complex character from The Accidental Tourist. This is a book which is basically about a man named Macon, who is
a travel writer and yet his books are for people who hate to travel. He essentially tells them how to avoid the whole travel experience, and to play it
safe with American restaurant choices, avoiding human contact, and the like. What is interesting about this story is that his
own life is very similar to the books that he writes. His life is safe and comfortable, and always within the limits of the familiar and known. He
hates change and goes to great lengths to avoid new situations or experiences. In fact, his family is much the same way. His sister and two brothers still
