considerable risk for suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. As a result, evaluations of suicide risk often occur as a part of the clinical response to bipolar disorder in adolescents.
Geller & DelBello (2005) maintained that it is generally recognized within the clinical community that suicidal ideation does not occur for the most part in the absence of psychopathology,
and subsequently relate mood disorders, especially bipolar disorder, as common in elevating the prevalence of suicidal ideation. Bipolar populations are often viewed as having elevated risk of suicide (44%
higher) as compared to those without the disorder (Geller & DelBello, 2005). Miklowitz, Mullen & Chang (2008) maintained that between one quarter and one half of all individuals
with bipolar disorder will attempt suicide at least one time in their lives, and that as many as 18.9 percent will die as a result of their attempted suicide (p.
166). Subsequently, it has been recognized that suicidal risk is significant among children and adolescents with bipolar disorder and that treatment modalities have to take into consideration the breadth
of risk and the impact for families. Research suggests that there is a need to consider the approaches for assessing suicide risk; "...in order to determine the diagnostic
specificity of suicidal behavior, it is necessary to compare the clinical characteristics of those with suicidal behavior to those without such behavior" (Shaffer, 1985, as cited by Geller & DelBello,
