In observing an unfamiliar social situation, I decided to attend a meeting of Nichiren Shoshu buddhists. Upon entering the hosts apartment, everyone took off their shoes and sat on their
knees and observed an object of contemplation, which I later found out is called a Gohonzon. I would also later discover that the people were of a variety of
backgrounds. Some were born Jewish. Some were Christian. While many people did not practice their religion of birth regularly, they did celebrate holidays such as Christmas. However, they would
practice Buddhist rituals on a daily basis. What I observed at this particular meeting, which was held on a Friday night, were people chanting for what seemed like endless
minutes. It was actually approximately thirty minutes and by the time the chanting was over, the room was filled. As the meeting progressed and the people related their experiences as
to how much buddhism has helped them in their lives, and what benefits they had received, I also noticed their mode of dress. It appears that most of the members
had come from work and some were still dressed in their business attire. The meeting was held in midtown Manhattan, and for the most part, the people appeared to be
upper middle class. I believe this to be true due to the way in which they were dressed and their manner of speech. Language is an important tool for
discerning class. In fact, sociolinguistics explain that the realities of human speech as well as how a dialect of a particular language can help to delineate the age, sex, and
