of death, rebirth, and karma are all broached by Buddhism. One of the most captivating aspects of Buddhism is its tendency to question. Some have even debated whether
Buddhism could be viewed as much as a science as a religion. A number of observations serve to demonstrate, in fact, that Buddhism can indeed be regarded as not
only a religion but also as a science. The purpose of this paper is to not only outline the basic foundation of Buddhism but to make the argument that
Buddhism can be regarded in some perspectives as a science. It is also important to note, however, that Buddhism (just as the sciences themselves can) can be impacted by
sociological circumstance. As such it cannot be considered infallible. Then again, neither can the sciences.
Definitions In reality the terms "religion" and "science" are rooted in Western ideology (Rothberg, 1994). This makes it difficult to
apply these terms to the Eastern concept of Buddhism. The fact that the usage of these two terms has changed throughout history complicates matters even further (Rothberg, 1994).
The first step therefore in determining how these two concepts, "religion" and "science" apply to Buddhism is defining them. For general guidance on the definitions for the purposes of
