ranges between 2 and 4 years of age. The classroom for 4-year-olds was observed more specifically, the children were between the ages of 48 and 56 months old. There were 15 children, 9 girls and 6 boys, in the group with one teacher and three teacher assistants. The center itself has three teachers and seven assistants so the ratio of adult to child is very low. Four activities took place during the observation time: circle reading, outdoor play, snack time and free play. During reading time, the teacher, Christy, called the children to come sit on the rug in a big two-row U-shape in front of her. Christy had a Big Book so there were large pictures on every page. She interrupted her reading frequently to have children describe the picture and/or to comment on what was happening in the story. Between these behaviors and her expressive reading, the children were totally engrossed in the story. Mary also praised children, calling them by name, as they responded to her questions. Reading time lasted just over 15 minutes. One assistant sat with the children on the rug. The other two were preparing materials in other areas of the classroom. The next activity was outdoor play, which lasted for 35 minutes. The yard had exceptionally nice equipment. There was a large log-type structure with stairs, tunnels, bridges, slides, cubbyholes and walls. There was a separate swing set that was obviously very sturdy. There were also a number of other outdoor type toys including a childs basketball set with nerf balls, another nerf batting set, large balls, jump ropes, cars and trucks, and dolls and strollers.
