its brick-covered walls to its filled ashtrays, dirty tables and musty aroma of Italian delicacies, the restaurant would have seemed typical of even the most suburban New Jersey locations, had
I not been analyzing it from a sociocultural perspective. In a conglomeration of varying social clicks sat and stood nearly fifteen uniquely profound individuals eating, drinking and socializing in
this culturally diverse haven for city dwellers. At the counter stood Marino Mancuso, I knew his name only because he was called by it at
least once every few minutes. A burly, beer-bellied man with grayish-black hair, Marino consistently expressed his mirth towards his job more so than anyone I had ever seen.
Distinctly Italian in his manner, Marino proudly sang foreign songs aloud and without shame as he pressed pizza dough with his rough, callused hands. Although I could not understand
the foreign words of his song, I would soon begin to understand the importance of Marino. Content and polite, he was more than a pizza-maker; Marino was a father
figure to a neighborhood who respected his demeanor and longed for the genuine cultural heritage they found at Sals pizzeria. The "dining room" contained eight
booths presumably for customers to sit while they ate Marinos concoctions. In one such booth was a group of local kids clad in high school varsity jackets, Marlboro cigarette
