single street of shops, around which people would congregate, socialize and browse merchandise. Standing in front of the local barbershop or grocery, an observer could get an impression of the
character of the town and its people. In todays world this scenario is largely a thing of the past. Today, if one wants to people watch and see Americans in
what might be considered their "native habitat," the place to go is the local mall. In recent years, malls have tried to recreate the feeling of the small main
street. Theres the traditional, closed-in part of the mall, where shoppers can browse in a climate-controlled comfort, but there is also a "street," i.e., shops adjacent to the main mall
arranged adjacent to a single thoroughfare. At one such mall, the "Streets at South Point," located in Durham, North Carolina, there is a carnival atmosphere on the weekends as the
mall management provides live entertainment, which consists bands composed of local musicians. They play mostly jazz, blues or soft rock, which is sure to appeal to a wide variety of
people. Also local performance artists are scattered periodically down the length of this "street." The people wandering around, those perched on the edge of the large water fountain listening
to the music, as well as some people who are actually shopping, offer a cross-section of Durhams population. For example, there are groups of teenagers who have obviously come to
the mall together; small groups of African Americans; Hispanics and white kids who largely keep to segregated groups, but there are some integrated groups of teens, as well. Increasingly,
there are also more white-and-black couples that are obviously on a date, which is a demographical feature that did not occur in the South thirty years ago. About once
