the HSU Childrens Center is to provided quality and affordable child care services for the students, faculty and staff of Humboldt State University and the community of Arcata, CA. The program is divided into five different age groups, from Young Toddlers (ages 12 months to 18 months) to Preschool (ages 3 to 5 years) (About the Center, 2003). The program philosophy also relates to the integration of student participants, child development students who act as teacher assistants, under the guidance of the certified educators who direct each program. This program, then, is both a childcare program and an educational model. The primary goals of the program, as cited in their parent handbook, are: 1. provide low cost childcare to the families of students, staff and faculty; 2. give children a variety of experiences to help them meet developmental goals; 3. encourage children to be self-reliant, responsible and respectful of others; 4. provide an environment that will protect the well-being of the child (HSU Handbook, 2003). In meeting these goals, the center supports both indoor and outdoor activities and focuses on programs that incorporate creative and language arts, social skill development, sensory exploration and self-help skills (HSU Handbook, 2003). Policies The policies of the Center are made up by a board that consists of the University administration (particularly, the Center director), the Center staff, and a representative of the Parent Advisory Board. Policies require a concensus of this board, and policy changes are subject to the same kind of review (HSU Handbook, 2003).
