gathering on picnic blankets, ready to take in the fireworks in the sky. Their heads would eventually relax and their eyes would be centered on the explosions representing what occurred
on a fateful evening more than two centuries ago. But prior to the start of the fireworks, the people would be in their own element, doing ordinary things such as
eating, talking, smoking or taking exercise. It was an ordinary slice of life on one hand, but it was an extraordinary gathering on the other. In observing the people
for one hour, I also noticed that there were some individuals riding bicycles oblivious to what was about to occur. I was there prior to the fireworks, while it was
still light, but at a time very close to the scheduled celebration. There was music and I noticed an old, black gentleman sitting on a bench alone swaying to the
music. I also noticed that while the majority of people were scantily dressed, or at least dressed in typical summer garb, there were some individuals who wore more formal attire.
A family of Muslims came through the park but only stood while they waited for the event. The girls wore jeans but were wearing head kerchiefs and they stood out
from the crowd. I noticed many of the people wearing patriotic wear. They either sported red, white and blue coloration or special shirts to denote the holiday. These are typical
holiday shirts with flags or other symbols. They were obviously worn with the purpose of this celebration and for no other. I have seen some of these shirts in department
stores like Kohls at very low prices. This seems a part of the tradition, at least for the masses. But then there were some individuals who were dressed a bit
