a narrative. The student may use the column format if they wish. However, it is only a tool to arrive at the narrative itself, which could be something like the
following. The Experiment I sat at the table with the pineapple on a plate in front of me. I turned off everything that might be distracting, such as the TV
and my cell phone and concentrated on observing the fruit. At first I felt really silly-after all, everyone knows what a pineapple is and what it looks like, so how
could I discover anything new? But I decided to stop prejudging the assignment and just go with it, and make an real effort to use all five senses to describe
the pineapple. When I did that, my perception shifted dramatically. The first thing that really hit me was the odor. The pineapple was very fragrant and smelled wonderful. It is
a very rich smell, but also somewhat "heavy." It is a distinctive smell, I mean that nobody can possibly mistake it for anything else. I also noticed that at times
the odor was almost too powerful, as if it were over-ripe and on the verge of turning nasty. I think the pineapple is ready to eat right now and if
I wait much longer itll be past its prime and over into that area where it tastes just very slightly rotten. I have decided that I will taste the pineapple
as the last step of the observation. It seemed strange that I started with smell rather than sight, but that was what really hit me when I first sat down.
