any other societal "norm." In terms of an analysis of the various components that directly impact the larger realities of the relationships between community and specific linguistic discourse, one must
be able to differentiate between what is said, how it is said, what the intended meaning actually is, and what the message that exists within the obvious message actually is.
In terms of entertainment, the message is often one that stretches the boundaries of what would be accepted within the normal framework of human interaction. As a result, the broad
category of "entertainment" and what that encompasses is often responsible for manipulating the attitudes, beliefs, and actions of the groups toward which it is directed. In this "information age" of
the 21st century, the manipulation of information, regardless of how it is presented, has become a principal political and ideological weapon. The vocabulary of the advertising and public relations industries
has spread to the news management and entertainment industry, collectively known as the media. Manipulation of words and images virtually always leads to a variety of interpretations, thus influencing social
cognition. Consider the apparition of Britney Spears as the "all-American girl." Violently and Superficially Obscene Superficiality, obscenity, and violence characterize films and television today because those qualities are commercially successful.
